naturopathyNaturopathic medicine is based on the belief that the human body has an innate healing ability.

Naturopathic doctors (NDs) teach their patients to use diet, exercise, lifestyle changes and natural therapies, including nutritional supplements, homeopathy and more, to help the patient reach optimal health. They take into account not only the physical but also mental, emotional and spiritual health of patients.

Naturopathic doctors (NDs) are primary care physicians*** who have attended a four-year naturopathic medical school, are clinically trained, and work in all aspects of family health.

At Grand Rapids Natural Health, our two Naturopathic doctors are Dr. Kelly Hassberger and Dr. Christine Schoenek. To schedule a 15 minute complimentary consultation with either of them, please click here.

6 Principles of Naturopathy

Naturopathic medicine recognizes an inherent healing process in the person that is ordered and intelligent. The body is capable of healing itself. The role of the naturopathic doctor is to remove obstacles to healing and to stimulate this inherent natural tendency of the body.

Naturopathic doctors seek to identify and remove the underlying causes of illness, not merely eliminate or suppress symptoms.

Naturopathic doctors seek to do no harm by using methods and substances that minimize risks of side effects, using the least force needed to diagnose and treat, avoiding the harmful suppression of symptoms and working with the self-healing process.

Naturopathic doctors recall that the origin of the word “doctor” is the Latin word, “to teach.” A fundamental emphasis in naturopathic medicine is patient education.

Naturopathic doctors attempt to take into consideration all the factors that make up patients’ lives and affect their health and well-being.

medicine emphasizes the prevention of disease, assesses risk factors,
and makes appropriate interventions with patients to prevent illness.

homeopathyHomeopathy is a system of healing which involves using highly diluted substances with the aim of triggering the body’s natural system of healing. Based on their specific presentation, a homeopath will match the most appropriate remedy to each individual patient.

Homeopathy is based on the principle that you can treat ‘like with like’, that is, a substance which causes symptoms when taken in large doses, can be used in small amounts to treat those same symptoms.Kelly S. Hassberger uses homeopathy with the majority of her patients.

homeopathyLifestyle is the foundation of health – from the foods we eat to how we cope with stress in our everyday lives. Making adjustments in key areas can give your body the resources it needs to restore health naturally. Because each client’s health is unique, Kelly makes individualized recommendations based on your needs.

Lifestyle counseling can include the assessment of the quality of food and water, your exposure to environmental toxins, the quality and quantity of your sleep, your stress management techniques, exercise routine, and other factors.

Supplements & Herbs

homeopathySupplements help replenish the essential vitamins and minerals that our body needs to maintain optimal health. Food processing and modern agricultural practices are making these
nutrients less available through the foods we eat. Because our bodies cannot make these nutrients on their own, we must get them through supplementation.

Herbs and other botanicals have been used for healing in many ancient cultures. Modern science is showing that the compounds in herbs can have a dramatic effect on restoring and maintaining health in the body.

Dietary Counseling

homeopathyMany health conditions can be effected by the types of foods we eat, the quality and quantity of food, and the quality of water we drink. Fruits and vegetables contain many phytochemicals, antioxidants, vitamins and minerals. Whole grains provide immune boosting beta glucans and are a rich source of the B Vitamins.

Some clients may have special dietary needs such as gluten or dairy sensitivities, high blood sugar, or digestive issues. Food allergy assessment, and access to resources about these types of dietary concerns can help patients make positive changes that can help their body restore health naturally.
